AP® 란?

AP(Advanced Placement)란 미국, 캐나다 등지의 고등학교 학생들에게 대학교 학점을 얻을 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 프로그램을 말한다. 비영리 기관인 'College Board'는 1955년부터 다양한 과목의 AP® 프로그램을 지원하고, 매월 5월 둘째주부터 실시되는 AP®시험을 주관하고 있다. 매년, 많은 고등학교 학생들이 AP®과정을 고등학교에서 수강하고 AP®시험을 치르고 있다. 5점 만점으로 평가되는 AP시험에서 4점 이상이 되면 학생들은 그에 따른 대학교 학점을 얻을 수 있다. 현재, 34개 과목의 AP®과정이 있으며, 각 과정은 보통 대학교 1학년 수준의 학과목을 수강하는 것이라고 보면 된다.


AP® 에 대해 알아야 할점

1. 2011년도에는 대략 2백만명의 학생들이 18,000개의 고등학교에서 340만 의 AP®시험을 치뤘다.

2. AP®시험에는 총 34개의 다양한 과목이 있다.

3. 미국의 주요 고등학교들은 현재 AP®프로그램을 실시하고 있다.

4. 포트폴리오 시험을 진행하는 3개의 스튜디오 아트 시험을 제외하고는, AP®시험은 객관식 및 주관식으로 이루어져 있다.

5. AP®시험 비용은 각 시험 당 87불 이며 미국 외 국가 및 캐나다에서 시험을 칠 경우 시험 당 $117 이다. (저임금 해당 학생에게는 $26 할인혜택이 있다.)

6. 3,800 개 이상의 대학에서 AP®시험 점수를 인정하고 있다.
